GOOD NEWS: KZN to help unemployed people get driving licences

The KZN Transport Department is inviting jobseekers in the province to join a programme that will assist them get driver’s licences.

The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department has issued a call to unemployed residents in the province to participate in a programme aimed at helping them acquire driver’s licences, thus improving their employment prospects.

In line with the provincial Transport Month campaign, the Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, has launched the Thuthuka Driving Skills Programme, which is set to benefit over 3000 individuals of all age groups. The program offers free learner’s and driving licenses, ranging from Code 8 to Code 14.

South Africa’s high unemployment rate is still a major problem, and getting to work typically requires access to transportation.

Hlomuka emphasized the importance of this initiative in contributing to job creation.

“Possessing a driver’s license significantly enhances employment opportunities across various sectors. The department is also collaborating with driving schools to facilitate the program’s implementation,” said Hlomuka.

APPLICANTS INTERESTED IN GETTING THE DRIVING LICENCES MUST:

  • Have Matric or equivalent NQF level 4
  • Be under the age of 35, Not in Employment, Training, and Education,
  • Be South African citizens
  • Provide proof of parent’s affordability (pension, no income)

To access the application form for the program, you can visit the Department’s website and navigate to the Electronic Reading Room on the left-hand sidebar, select “Forms,” and then choose “Thuthuka Skills Development Programme Application Form” for download and completion.

Completed application forms can be submitted at the nearest Department of Transport Regional Office, Cost Centre office, or the department’s Head Office.

DEADLINE

The deadline for programme applications is set for 17 October 2023.
