Gupta brothers denied bail in India for involvement in death of builder

The two Gupta brothers, Ajay and Anil, were denied bail in India for their alleged involvement in the death of a prominent builder. 

THE GUPTA BROTHERS APPEARED IN COURT ON FRIDAY

According to a report by Times India, the district court dismissed the duo’s bail application on Friday.

The Gupta brothers had sought bail on medical grounds, assuring the

court of their cooperation in the ongoing investigation.

Indian authorities arrested the brothers on 24 May for their alleged involvement in the suicide of the prominent builder, Satyendra Singh Sahni, in the country.

Dehradun is less than 100km from the Gupta’s hometown of Saharanpur.

The two Gupta relatives were taken into custody by police for allegedly abetting the suicide of, according to Times of India.

Sani left a suicide note addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  

THE BUILDER COMMITTED SUICIDE AFTER THE GUPTA BROTHER ALLEGEDLY BLACKMAILED HIM 

In the note, he stated that the Gupta relatives had been threatening him for some time, leading him to take his own life.

According to the affidavit, Sani committed suicide by jumping from the eighth floor of the Pacific Golf on Sahasradhara Road. The suicide note was found in his pocket.

HE JUMPED FROM THE EIGHT FLOOR 

Sani apparently said that the brothers had been pressuring him over financial matters related to a partnership project.

The suicide note also mentions the threats and blackmailing harassment by the Gupta brothers. 

THEY FOUND A DETAILED SUICIDE NOTE IN HIS POCKET 

In 2023, Ranvir Sahni, the son of Satyendra, lodged a complaint against the Guptas.

The Times of India report states: 

“My father was under immense stress. As the UP police demanded his presence regarding a false case lodged by the Guptas in Saharanpur. 

“The police then set a deadline of Friday for his appearance. Meanwhile, the two pressured my father to transfer ownership of his two construction companies to them. Threatening both him and his son-in-law with imprisonment if he refused.

“They vowed to create circumstances compelling enough for him to take his own life. Which tragically occurred on Friday morning,” Rabir said in a statement. 

POLICE ARRESTED THE GUPTA BROTHERS AT THEIR RESIDENCE

Police arrested the Guptas from their residence in the Dalawala area of Dehradun. 

It is believed the Gupta brothers appeared in court on Saturday. 

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice and Correctional Services reportedly says it will communicate with Indian officials to discuss a possible engagement. 

SA IS STILL TRYING TO EXTRADITE THE OTHER BROTHERS 

According to a report by IOLSouth Africa is still trying to extradite the other Gupta brothers, Atul and Rajesh, from the United Arab Emirates. 

In April, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it faced challenges in its bid to extradite them back to South Africa.
