Mid-month data now indicates that South African motorists could face bad news in July 2025.

Earlier this month, vehicle owners in South Africa enjoyed a notable drop in petrol and diesel prices, and initial signs pointed to further relief next month.

However, that outlook shifted dramatically after Israel attacked Iran late last week, causing Brent crude oil prices to surge.

Below, the latest projections as received by The South African website from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), effective Monday, 16 June.

FUELPRICE CHANGE
Petrol 93increase of 6 cents
Petrol 95increase of 9 cents
Diesel 0.05%increase of 10 cents
Diesel 0.005%increase of 12 cents
Illuminating Paraffinincrease of 1 cent

If market conditions stay consistent for the rest of the month, though that’s unlikely due to the fluctuating rand/dollar exchange rate and volatile oil prices, petrol 93 octane motorists can expect a 6-cent increase, while 95 octane users could see a 9-cent hike.

Meanwhile, diesel motorists would see something between a 10 and 12 cents per litre increase.

Finally, illuminating paraffin is expected to rise by 1 cent in price.

FUEL PRICE IN SOUTH AFRICA IMPACTED BY TWO MAIN FACTORS:

1. The international price of petroleum products, driven mainly by oil prices

2. The rand/dollar exchange rate used in the purchase of these products.

Oil price

At the time of publishing the brent crude oil price is $74.61 a barrel.

Exchange rate

At the time of publishing the rand/dollar exchange rate is R17.83/$.

The final overall price changes for both petrol and diesel will be confirmed early next month with the new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, 1 July 2025.

Go easy on the accelerator until then, Mzansi.
