Authorities have approved a brand new tidal pool project at Hout Bay Beach, and the first phase is expected to begin soon.

According to IOL, Sandy Daniel and the Feel Good Initiative (FGI) are leading the project, which aims to provide a safe, inclusive, and environmentally friendly swimming space.

The project is designed to benefit underserved communities like Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg, where access to secure coastal recreational facilities is limited.

Other goals for the tidal pool project include improving ocean safety, supporting marine education, boosting eco-tourism, and ensuring minimal environmental impact.

The design will integrate with the natural shoreline and replace the ageing revetment.

FGI plans to spend around R50 million on the tidal pool and is currently preparing a sponsorship prospectus to raise the necessary funds.

“This is a major community project we are working on through The Feel Good Initiative. The first phase of the project involves appointing a qualified Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP), and we are in the process of securing the necessary funding to move this stage forward.” Daniel said, as per IOL.

The proposed tidal pool site also lies within a Marine Protected Area, and FGI stressed its commitment to protecting sensitive ecosystems by incorporating natural rock formations, consulting marine biologists, and ensuring ongoing environmental monitoring.
