Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens re-opens for visitors despite nearby fires

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) has confirmed that the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are open for patrons after the veld fires in the vicinity.

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) on Tuesday, 30 April confirmed that the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are open for patrons. 

Due to lightning strikes on Sunday, fires have been raging in the mountains above Kirstenbosch, as reported by The South African website.

Firefighters are continuing to battle the various fires which have broken out on Table Mountain.

“Following consultations with stakeholders, and based on the prevailing wind direction, we have decided not to close the Garden,” said Nontsikelelo Mpulo, director of Marketing Communications and Commercialisation at SANBI. 

“We are monitoring the situation and following guidance from the SANParks fire chief. Further decisions will be taken should conditions change.”

Meanwhile, as reported by The South African website, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden was named the Best Botanical Garden in Africa by the World Luxury Travel Awards in late 2023.
