Emergency disaster management teams and personnel are on high alert as MORE heavy rains and floods are anticipated TODAY in KwaZulu-Natal.

DISASTER TEAMS ARE ON HIGH ALERT IN SEVERAL FLOODED AREAS

The Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs (Cogta) department in KwaZulu-Natal has cautioned residents living in the districts of Ugu, Zululand, King Cetshwayo, Umkhanyakude, and eThekwini metro to be vigilant after homes were flooded, and vehicles were damaged since Tuesday.

eThekwini Municipality teams have been working through the night to support communities.

“Teams have been deployed to communities to open halls to accommodate displaced families and to render other assistance such as food, blankets and mattresses. Halls have been opened in Folweni, Amoati, Amatikwe, Redfern in Phoenix, and Inanda Newtown C.”

EThekwini Fleet is on standby to transport families and their belongings to the various halls.

VARIOUS HALLS HAVE BEEN OPENED TO ACCOMMODATE DISPLACED FAMILIES

The municipality furthermore said search and rescue teams have been rescuing families trapped by water in their homes.

EMERGENCY DISASTER TEAMS ARE ON HIGH ALERT IN THESE AREAS

Meanwhile, the SA Weather Service (SAWS) said warned that extreme COLD, rain, and snow are expected across South Africa.

The conditions are expected for the remainder of this week.

“These conditions are expected to result from the passage of a cut-off low (COL), which is currently situated along the west coast of the country. Very cold temperatures have already set in on the western regions of the Free State and North West provinces.”

DISRUPTIVE RAIN IN PLACES HAS ALREADY IMPACTED SOME COMMUNITIES

Disruptive rain in places has already impacted some communities along the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal and the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape on Tuesday, and these rainy conditions are likely to continue on and off into Wednesday, 28 June 2023.

“Moreover, wet, cold to very cold conditions are expected to spread to the central provinces of the country, with a risk of storms which may produce heavy downpours, excessive lighting and large amounts of small hail.”
