A popular car manufacturer has launched its largest vehicle assembly plant in South Africa, situated along the sunny shores of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
On 12 August, Mahindra South Africa officially opened the new plant at Durban’s Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
The launch marks a major expansion in the country’s automotive manufacturing landscape.
Mahindra opens state-of-the-art assembly plant
This purpose-built facility, located next to Mahindra’s original 2018 assembly site, replaces the semi-knocked-down (SKD) setup and now assembles the Pik Up range, both single- and double-cab variants, from the ground up.
With the capacity to produce over 1,000 vehicles per month, the plant is built for flexibility and future expansion, including introducing new models and increasing the use of locally sourced components.
eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development Musa Zondi, Mahindra South Africa CEO Rajesh Gupta, and other dignitaries attended the launch.
Mayor Xaba hailed the facility as a new chapter for local manufacturing, especially in the automotive sector.
The opening of this new Durban plant also marks Mahindra’s third decade in South Africa.
