The MEC said one of the contributing causes leading to gender-based violence, child abuse, community instability, trauma incidents, rape and other various sexual misconducts is alcohol.

According to the department, Monama vowed to cut liquor trading hours.

“It is through this action that the department will see liquor outlets which our people usually refer to as nightclubs taverns, shebeens, liquor restaurants, etc. being brought to a standstill by midnight during all operating days.

“Monama has further indicated that the midnight law regarding closure of all liquor restaurants will be implemented without fail from 1 August,” the department said on Tuesday.
