Matric learner who died while on holiday obtained five distinctions

Matric learner, Declan Murphy reportedly died in a freak accident while on holiday with his parents during the December holidays.

Declan Murphy, a learner from St Benedict’s College in Bedfordview, Ekurhuleni, who died before the Class of 2023 matric results were released, obtained five distinctions.

Murphy reportedly died while on holiday with his parents in Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape.

Murphy who obtained five distinctions in English, Geography, Mathematics, Physical Science and Life Orientation reportedly fell from a balcony while on holiday with his parents and died.

St Benedicts College paid tribute to the late 19-year-old matric learner on their Facebook page.

“An excellent set of results by a young man who has gone too soon! Your life was a testament to your passion and dedication to excellence. We were honoured to have been your school of choice since Junior Prep.

“Rest in peace, Declan. Thank you to the Murphy family for allowing us to celebrate Declan’s achievements with the world,” the school wrote on its Facebook page.

CLASS OF 2023 RESULTS ANNOUNCED

Over 890 000 full-time and part-time candidates wrote the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams in 2023.

The official pass rate for the class of 2023 was 82.9% which is up from 80.1% in 2022. Motshekga was pleased to announce that all provinces had pass rates above the 70% mark.

Free State is the leading province with 89% and is surprisingly followed by KwaZulu-Natal. Over the years it was Gauteng, Free State and Western Cape who were always among the top three best-performing provinces.
