Matric Results: Western Cape DROPS to fourth

Western Cape has once again produced to country’s top performing matriculant, however the province has dropped in provincial standings.

The Western Cape saw a marginal increase of 0,1% in their 2023 matric results as the province achieved an overall pass rate of 81,5% compared to 81,4% in 2022.

SLOW PROGRESS IN THE WESTERN CAPE

While other provinces have shown significant improvements, the Western Cape, barring 2020, has stagnated around the 81% average pass rate, since 2018.

The province’s results since 2018:

  • 2018- 81,5%
  • 2019- 82,3%
  • 2020- 79,9%
  • 2021- 81,2%
  • 2022- 81,4%
  • 2023- 81,5%

The province however was able to once again province the country’s top performing matriculant. Melissa Muller from Rhenish Girls’ High School in Stellenbosch came out on top with an average of 97,6%.

Muller managed achieve a perfect grade(100%) in accounting and mathematics while securing 99% in physical science and life sciences.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MEC

Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier, has congratulated the class of 2023 and says it has succeeded despite the many challenges they faced.

“This is an incredible achievement considering the events of 2023, including a devastating minibus taxi strike and an illegal blockade of learner transport in Khayelitsha, two massive floods, and ongoing crippling load shedding”, says Maynier.

The MEC has encouraged the class of 2024 to not relax in this crucial year.

“You have very big shoes to fill. We believe that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to, and we challenge you to follow the example of the 2023 candidates and get stuck in on the hard work from day one! We will support you every step of the way as we strive to give every learner a better future in the Western Cape.”
