The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) removed Floyd Shivambu from his position as Secretary-General after he travelled to Malawi over Easter to attend a church service led by Shepherd Bushiri.

Bushiri, a fugitive, fled South Africa with his wife, Mary, in 2020 while out on bail. They face fraud and money laundering charges.

In March this year, Malawi’s courts approved South Africa’s request to extradite the couple.

FLOYD SHIVAMBU AXED AS MKP SG

In a media statement, the party said Shivambu’s visit was unauthorised. He travelled without informing the party or the President. The MK Party stated that Floyd Shivambu violated its constitution by taking an international trip that conflicted with the party’s agenda, as outlined in Section 3(j).

President Jacob Zuma met with MK leaders on 2 June, and after lengthy discussions, they agreed that Shivambu’s trip undermined the party’s values and damaged its image.

The party said the trip was not part of any official programme and that they had received concerns from civil society.

MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT

Officials confirmed that Shivambu will now take up a role as a Member of Parliament, saying his experience will bring value to the position. Shivambu accepted the redeployment.

The MK Party thanked him for his service as Secretary-General and National Organiser, acknowledging his skills but emphasising that discipline remains a top priority.
