Cape Winelands Airport, set to become Cape Town’s second airport, has moved a step closer to development after officials formally submitted its Environmental Authorisation (EA) application to the government.

Speaking at a recent Chamber Chapter meeting at Groot Phesantekraal Wine Estate in Durbanville, Cape Winelands Airport Managing Director Deon Cloete confirmed the submission earlier this month, according to BusinessTech.

Authorities are expected to deliver a decision later this year.

“We’ve been working for five years, last week we made the final submission for EA,” Cloete said, emphasising the years of planning and preparation behind the project.

With environmental compliance underway, the R7 billion Cape Winelands Airport project has entered a more advanced phase.

Deon Cloete confirmed that the airport has appointed a dedicated finance team to handle investment and loan proposals — a critical step toward securing funding for the large-scale infrastructure project.

Planned for the Cape Winelands region, the airport is expected to serve as a strategic alternative to Cape Town International Airport, helping to ease regional air traffic and boost tourism, trade, and economic development across the Western Cape.

The next few months will be key in determining how soon construction can begin, depending on environmental approval and financing progress.
