The SPCA has strongly criticised the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for refusing to take action against Julius Malema over a disturbing video showing him slaughtering a cow with a blunt knife.
In 2023, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader sparked controversy during a ceremonial slaughter event held just days before the party’s 10th anniversary celebrations at FNB Stadium.
NPA WON’T PROSECUTE MALEMA – HERE’S WHY…
This week, the NPA announced it would not prosecute Julius Malema over a viral video showing him slaughtering a cow with a small knife that failed to kill the animal swiftly.
The NPA explained it could not present enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the video violated the Animal Protection Act. It also raised concerns about the authenticity of the footage.
In July 2023, Malema took part in the EFF’s ceremonial slaughter event held in Magaliesberg.
In a disturbing viral video, Julius Malema attempted to slaughter a cow but struggled for some time, using a blunt knife that caused the animal significant distress. He stabbed the cow in the poll—the area between its head and ears—and twisted the knife multiple times.
The footage sparked public outrage, with many urging the NSPCA to take action. Animal activists objected at the time, arguing that the cow had not been given a quick or humane death.
SPCA REACTS: ‘WE ARE DEEPLY DISHEARTENED’
A few months after the video was made public, the SPCA formally charged Julius Malema with animal cruelty under the Animal Protection Act.
