Ramaphosa welcomes efforts to accelerate progress of SDGs

Ramaphosa has praised the Indian Presidency’s initiatives to quicken the Sustainable Development Goals’ development.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has praised the Indian Presidency’s initiatives to quicken the Sustainable Development Goals‘ development.

Ramaphosa stated on Saturday that “the SDGs must continue to be at the center of international financing discussions to ensure that finance is mobilized in sufficient quantities and of suitable quality to support development in low- and middle-income countries.”

WHICH NATIONS ARE URGED TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION?

All nations, developed and developing, are urged to take immediate action as part of a global partnership by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

They understand that combating poverty and other forms of deprivation requires policies that enhance health and education, lessen inequality, promote economic growth, combat climate change, and fight to protect our oceans and forests.

WHAT DID RAMAPHOSA PRAISE?

The President praised the Indian Presidency’s emphasis on women’s empowerment as a component of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in his statement on the Working Session II: One Family, G20 Leaders’ Summit that took place in New Delhi, India.

“South Africa has started a journey to make sure that women’s empowerment. Girls’ education must be given top priority. Action must be taken to put an end to gender-based violence and make it possible for women to participate fully in economic life,” said Ramaphosa.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMITTING TO STRENGTHENING THE GLOBAL HEALTH ARCHITECTURE

He emphasised the importance of committing to strengthening the global health architecture for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, and support ongoing engagement on how this proposed architecture will be funded.

“Our experience of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic sends a clear message that global health security is paramount. There is need to develop robust global one health surveillance systems that promote effective collaboration at national, regional and global level.

“We urgently need a coordination mechanism that supports the sharing of information and resources, research, outbreak investigation and response,” he said.
