SASSA: Latest details for Easter 2024 payments

SASSA has released the latest info on 2024 Easter payments, including more on the long-awaited payment increases and dates you can diarise for deposit.

The South African Social Security Agency has assured beneficiaries that 2024 Easter SASSA payments will go off without a hitch. This is despite a raft of government-mandated changes that could stretch the agency to the limit. As The South African reported earlier this month, all 2024 Easter SASSA payments (bar the SRD grant) will be increased following the Finance Minister’s February budget speech.

At one of the most important times of the year for family and friends, 2024 Easter SASSA payments will be disbursed as follows:

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant has been increased by R20 to R370 for the first time in four years. However, recipients must remember that’s only from April onwards. So, this month (March) still pays just R350 from Monday 25 March 2024 to Friday 29 March 2024. The last payment date falls on Good Friday of the Easter Weekend.

Of course, many are complaining about the meagre increase of just R20 from April onwards. NGOs and social justice groups believe it should have increased to match inflation, in which case it should pay R480 to each of the 8.5-million beneficiaries. Likewise, economists don’t know where the additional R2.2 billion to fund the increase will come from.

Nevertheless, the rest of 2024 Easter SASSA payments look like so:

  • SASSA Older Persons Grants: Wednesday 3 April 2024. Increased to R2 180 (over 60 years old) and R2 200 (over 75 years old)
  • SASSA Disability Grants: Thursday 4 April 2024. Increased to R2 180.
  • SASSA Children’s Grants: Friday 5 April 2024. Increased to R2 180 for Child Dependency, while Foster Care stays at R1 180 and Child Support at R530.
