Snow transforms parts of the Eastern Cape into a wonderland
Snow transformed parts of South Africa’s Eastern Cape province into a winter wonderland overnight.

This week, a rare and dramatic cold front swept across South Africa, bringing snow to parts of the Eastern Cape and transforming the province’s higher-lying regions into a winter wonderland.
This morning, June 10, snow covered the rooftops, roads turned icy, and temperatures dipped well below freezing in Eastern Cape towns like Barkly East, Rhodes, Sterkspruit, and Elliot.
Light flurries were also reported around Molteno and Dordrecht, where locals braved the cold to snap photos and share videos of the snowfall online.
Disruptive snow expected
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued warnings for disruptive snow on Monday, alerting communities in the northern as well as mountainous parts of the province. Snow began falling late Monday night and continued into Tuesday morning, with accumulations of 5 to 15 cm in some areas.
With more cold expected through the week, residents are advised to stay warm, travel only when necessary, and monitor official weather updates.
