South Africa could experience Stage 2 load shedding for the next year, according to Eskom’s load shedding outlook.

The power utility’s medium-term Generation Adequacy Report, which maps out risk levels, was recently published.

GENERATION ADEQUACY REPORT BREAKS DOWN ESKOM’S LOAD SHEDDING OUTLOOK INTO TWO RISK LEVELS

According to MyBroadBand, the Generation Adequacy Report, breaks down the load shedding outlook into two risk levels.

The first level is a base scenario for power outages, or the planned risk level. At this level, breakdowns could reach 17 200MW of capacity.

Eskom’s unplanned outage assumption sits at 15 000MW (or 1.5 stages of load shedding) for most of the coming year.

The  “likely risk scenario” could see breakdowns reach 18 700MW, which means the country could experience at least two stages of load shedding in the coming year.

Energy analyst Chris Yelland commented on the risk scenario. “The likely risk scenario for the next 52 weeks, taken directly from the latest Eskom system status report published on the Eskom website on Friday 31 March 2023 (Note: This is not an April fools joke, it is for real.),” he wrote on Twitter.
