South Africa to enforce tighter road rules in 2025
South African drivers are being warned: reduce your speed, don’t drink and drive, and keep your focus – or prepare to face tough penalties.

Starting 1 July 2025, South Africa will tighten its traffic laws in a major push to improve road safety. In response to the alarming number of road deaths, more than 12,500 recorded in 2023, the Department of Transport and SANRAL are rolling out stricter measures.
These include reduced speed limits, a zero-alcohol policy for drivers, and harsher penalties for offenders, all aimed at tackling reckless and distracted driving on the country’s roads.
