LAST PUSH FOR PROPS

Gerhard Steenekamp was called up to the Boks squad as back up for Ox Nche.

However, he is likely to be sent home and is unlikely to earn any gametime for the Springboks with Steven Kitshoff, Ox Nche, Frans Malherbe, Vincent Koch all a part of Nienaber and Rassie Erasmus’ plans.

Trevor Nyakane will get his first taste of rugby for the Boks against Argentina on Saturday, 29 July 203. This is a huge game for Nyakane who has missed out to Thomas du Toit in recent weeks. His performance could go a long way in determining his chances of booking his ticket to France.

Furthermore, it will determine the make-up of this squad. If Nyakane impresses, Nienaber may consider taking six props which could see another position such as lock or loose forward loose a player. Otherwise, it is a direct battle between Nyakane and du Toit.

BOKS LOCKED IN BATTLEFLANKS FIGHTING FOR SPOTS!

Kleyn and Orie are locked in battle for a spot with both players at risk of missing out.

Eben Etzebeth is likely to be joined by Lood de Jager, RG Snyman and Franco Mostert. Therefore, both players are at risk of missing out.

In captain Siya Kolisi’s absence, Marco van Staden has seemingly knocked down the selection door. He could validate this claim with another huge showing against the Pumas at Ellis Park. Furthermore, Kwagga Smith and Pieter-Steph du Toit have both done enough to book their tickets to France.

However, for Evan Roos and Deon Fourie, it does not look good. Both players only featured for a few minutes off of the bench against Australia in the Boks resounding 42-12 win at Loftus on 08 July 2023. Moreover, neither man was selected for the Boks Rugby Championship closing encounter against Argentina. Therefore, there last chance to impress could come in the Rugby World Cup warm-up game against Argentina in Buenos Aires on 5 August 2023.

BACKLINE BAROMETER SPELLS BAD NEWS

Jantjies (Herschel) has not played yet and in all honesty, he is fifth in the pecking order.

Faf de Klerk, Grant Williams and Cobus Reinach have all featured for South Africa this year. The same can be said for Hendrikse regarding lack of playing time but he has just returned from injury and he endured a personal loss with the passing of his father. It will be interesting to see who the Bok selectors opt for scrumhalf.

Elton Jantjies is in the picture but he is sitting along the frame. Handre Pollard, Manie Libbok and Damien Willemse will all be in France.

Finally, Jesse Kriel will make a last minute bid for his Rugby World Cup berth when he runs out in the number 13 jersey against Los Pumas on Saturday. However, along with Moodie, both players are at risk of missing out. One of Kriel, Moodie or Esterhuizen is likely to miss out.
