The City of Tshwane is set to close two cemeteries

The City of Tshwane has revealed plans to close two cemeteries, before the end of the first quarter of 2024.

In a recent announcement, the City in Region 1 has revealed plans to close the Ga-Rankuwa and Mabopane Cemeteries before the end of the first quarter of 2024.

This decision stems from a comprehensive assessment conducted by the city, indicating that both facilities have nearly exhausted their lifespan.

The findings of the assessment highlight that the burial space at Ga-Rankuwa and Mabopane Cemeteries is rapidly approaching its capacity limit.

WHEN ARE THE CEMETERIES CLOSURE DATES?

The anticipated closure dates are subject to the number of burials, with Mabopane Cemetery projected to reach the end of its lifespan by February 2024 or even earlier in January if the burial rate surpasses expectations.

Similarly, Ga-Rankuwa Cemetery’s lifespan is estimated to conclude by March 2024, but this date may be expedited if burial numbers exceed predictions.

Post-closure, the City is committed to informing the public and will provide reburial and/or reopening services. Along with facilitating bookings for the erection of tombstones. Furthermore, individuals will retain visitation rights to the gravesites.

WHERE WILL BURIALS BE REDIRECTED?

Residents are advised that, following the closure, burials will be redirected to the Klip-Kruisfontein Cemetery. Situated on the Ruth First Road off-ramp and in proximity to the Soshanguve Crossing Mall. Commonly known as the crossing cemetery, Klip-Kruisfontein Cemetery is the nearest facility capable of servicing the surrounding areas.

Acknowledging the importance of planning for future needs. The City’s Environmental Management Department is actively identifying new plots for the development of cemeteries to accommodate forthcoming burials.

“The City’s Environmental Management Department is working on identifying new plots for the development of cemeteries to cater for future burials,” read the statement.
