There was mixed news for South African motorists on Tuesday when the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy published the official fuel price adjustments for May 2023.

The wholesale diesel price will be lowered at midnight on Tuesday, 2 May, but petrol is getting more expensive.

Petrol prices will increase by 37 cents per litre, while diesel will decrease by between 48 cents and 74 cents per litre.

LPGAS decrease of 444 cents per kilogram

During the period under review, the price of oil increased from $79.24 a barrel to $82.20 over the past month, and the rand-dollar exchange rate saw the rand strengthen from R18.30/$ to R18.20.

Meanwhile, due to an increase in the carbon levy of 1 cent a litre – which comes into effect this week – the general fuel levy of petrol and diesel will now be R3.96 a litre and R3.82, respectively.
