Uber drivers bring South Africa’s largest city to a standstill over fare dispute
Uber users in Johannesburg are urged to arrange alternative transport as drivers prepare to shut down services on Tuesday.

Uber drivers in Johannesburg have announced a protest over ongoing disputes around fare pricing and commission deductions, prompting Uber users to seek alternative transport options.
Organisers say hundreds of drivers will gather in Kramerville on Tuesday before marching to Uber’s headquarters in Parktown to hand over a list of grievances.
Frustration
Driver representative Awelani Mashete says the protest is aimed squarely at one issue: unprofitable pricing.
“We are not fighting for many things,” Mashete said.
“We are only fighting for a price. We will continue with the strike until our demands are met.”
Drivers say recent changes to commission structures and base fare rates have slashed their earnings, leaving many operating at a loss.
The planned strike could heavily disrupt e-hailing services across Johannesburg, likely causing delays, price surges, and fewer available drivers citywide.
Uber South Africa has not yet issued an official response to the protest.
The situation is still developing, and more updates are expected as the demonstration continues.
