The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has confirmed a third major vehicle recall in October 2025, notifying consumers that 1,665 Nissan Qashqai Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are affected by a fuel leak risk.

The latest recall, announced on 27 October 2025, highlights a concerning trend of safety issues requiring consumer vigilance this month.

The recalled Nissan Qashqai vehicles were made available nationwide between 4 May 2021 and 17 October 2024. Nissan South Africa informed the NCC that there is potential for the fuel pipe to move within its retaining clip during engine operation, which could generate wear.

In a worst-case scenario, this wear could perforate the fuel pipe, resulting in a potential fuel leak.

The three major vehicle recall South Africa issues in October 2025

This recent Nissan issue follows two other significant safety concerns logged earlier this month. On 6 October 2025, BMW Group South Africa notified the NCC of a recall affecting 12,491 vehicles, including various models in the 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, Z4, X3, and X4 ranges, released in South Africa from 2016.

BMW’s submission detailed a risk where water could enter the Starter Motor, causing corrosion, which may lead to a short circuit, local overheating, or potentially a vehicle fire, even when the car is parked. Owners were also warned to avoid driving through water that could submerge the Starter Motor.

Mid-month, on October 15, 2025, Stellantis South Africa recalled the Peugeot Landtrek. This issue involved wear of the doorsill wiring harness caused by interference with the doorsill cover, posing the risk of unexpected airbag deployment without a collision.

NCC acting commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu said that the success of these recalls depends entirely on the immediate response by owners of these vehicles.

Consumers are strongly urged to take any affected vehicle – be it a Nissan, BMW or Peugeot – to the nearest authorised dealership for inspection and necessary repairs. Crucially, the replacement or repair work for all these recalls will be carried out at absolutely no cost to the consumer.

September recall

In September 2025, the NCC recalled 374 Volkswagen Amarok vehicles following a safety alert issued by Volkswagen South Africa.

The recall targeted Amarok models released between 10 January and 12 June 2025.
