WEATHER: Severe storm warning issued for THREE provinces

Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 for severe thunderstorms causing possible localised flooding, excessive lightning, damaging winds and hail over parts of South Africa.

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Yellow level 2 Warning: Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail resulting in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements are expected over the extreme northern parts of Free State, in place in the North West and the extreme northern parts of the Northern Cape.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Kamiesberg Local Municipality in the Northern Cape, and Matzikama Local Municipality in the Western Cape.

Weather conditions and UVB forecast in South Africa’s provinces

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect morning fog along the escarpment, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the extreme west.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, morning fog along the escarpment, otherwise cloudy and warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the Western Bushveld.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect partly cloudy and warm to hot, with scattered showers and thundershowers.

Free State

In Free State, partly cloudy and warm to hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Northern Cape

The day will start fine in the west and south, otherwise partly cloudy and hot to very hot with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-easterly to southerly.

Western Cape

Partly cloudy along the south coast in the early morning and from the evening, otherwise fine and hot to very hot but cool to warm over the south-western and southern parts. The wind along the coast will be light and variable along the south coast, otherwise fresh to strong south-easterly to southerly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Extreme

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cloudy with morning fog in places in the east, otherwise fine and warm, but hot over the interior. It will become cloudy in the south-east from the evening. The wind along the coast will be Light and variable early morning, otherwise light to moderate south-westerly, becoming westerly from the evening.

The Eastern half: The day will start cloudy with morning and evening fog in places south of the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated thunderstorms over the interior. The wind along the coast will be Light and variable in places, but light to moderate north-easterly, becoming south-westerly south of Coffee Bay from mid-morning.

KwaZulu-Natal

Morning fog over the interior, otherwise cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers in the west and central interior of KZN. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-easterly in the north at first, otherwise light to moderate northerly to north-easterly, reaching fresh at times.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Low
