Western Cape weather update: 55km/h winds and 5m waves expected

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for winds and waves in the Western Cape.

The warning is valid from Tuesday, 18 July to Wednesday, 19 July.

WINDS WAVES IN THE WESTERN CAPE

The weather service said very rough seas with wave heights of 4.0 to 5.0m and a period of 15 seconds are expected along the coast between Cape Columbine and Plettenberg Bay from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday.

“These conditions coupled with strong west to south-westerly winds of 45 – 55km/h are likely to bring some disruption,” SAWS said.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS

  • Difficulty in navigation at sea for small vessels and personal water crafts (e.g. kayaks).
  • Localised disruption of small harbours and/or a port for a short period of time.
  • Small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing in locality
  • Localised disruption to beachfront activities.

COLD FRONT TO HIT SA THIS WEEK

The weather service also issued a weather advisory for very cold, wet and windy weather conditions in the Western Cape and Northern Cape from Wednesday, 19 July until Thursday, 20 July.

SAWS said very cold, wet and windy conditions with possible snowfalls are expected in places over the interior of the Western Cape and southern parts of Namakwa district on Wednesday and Thursday.

SAWS also warned that temperatures may feel colder than the measured values.
