The City of Cape Town’s disaster risk management division is reportedly investigating the source of an ‘extremely loud rumble or blast’ heard by Capetonians on Wednesday afternoon.

Reports of a ‘noise’ at 17:39 were received from those living in areas as far afield as Mowbray to Parklands and Constantia to Sea Point and throughout the northern suburbs in particular.

The prevailing idea is that the cause of the noise was an explosion at a quarry along the N7.

The spokesperson for the Council for Geoscience, Mahlatse Mononela, said its systems showed no seismic activity in and around Cape Town on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the council’s website recorded a number of small seismic events on Wednesday – in Viljoenskroon, Fochville, Emalahleni and Grootvlei – but not in Cape Town.

Earthquake Monitor, interestingly, did pick up a ‘seismic-like event’ near Cape Town.

In February, a magnitude 3.49 earthquake occurred off the West Coast with the epicentre located approximately 20km west of Dassen Island in the Atlantic Ocean.

As reported by The South African website at the time, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake was felt in Johannesburg in early February.
