President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared that the late Nathi Mthethwa will be accorded a Special Official Funeral Category 2.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared that the late Nathi Mthethwa will be accorded a Special Official Funeral Category 2, in honour of his service to the nation.
The funeral service will take place on Sunday, 12 October, in KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal.
In addition, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across the country until the evening of the funeral, in line with the President’s directive.
A Lifetime of Public Service
Ambassador Mthethwa passed away in Paris, France, on 30 September, at the age of 58, where he was serving as South Africa’s Head of Mission since his appointment in December 2023.
Prior to his diplomatic role, Mthethwa served in Cabinet for 15 years, holding several key portfolios including:
- Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture
- Minister of Arts and Culture
- Minister of Police
- Minister of Safety and Security
He was widely recognised for his contributions to governance, policing, the arts, and national security, as well as his long-standing commitment to political activism during South Africa’s democratic transition.
Special Official Funeral Category 2
According to the Presidency, the Special Official Funeral Category 2 includes ceremonial honours performed by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The honour is reserved for distinguished individuals who have served the country in key national roles.
“On behalf of Government and the nation, President Ramaphosa reiterates his deepest condolences to Ambassador Mthethwa’s wife, Philisiwe Buthelezi, and the extended Mthethwa and Buthelezi families,” the Presidency said in a statement.
“The President assures the families of the nation’s appreciation for the diverse roles in which Ambassador Mthethwa served the country.”
Repatriation Underway
Mthethwa’s body is currently en route from France to South Africa, with preparations for the funeral being coordinated by both national and provincial authorities.
