It was a sad state of affairs as the South African Men’s National team lost to Rwanda in their second World Cup Qualifier. Coach Hugo Broos explained things well as he said “We lost the game in the first 20 minutes. In the first 20 to 25 minutes, we were not ready for the kick-and-rush football of Rwanda. I even told the players that they had to be careful with that. In the first 20 to 25 minutes, we gave two presents—two goals. We were not ready to go into duels. [For] the second goal, we had the ball. We did not take it and they scored again.”

BAFANA BAFANA GOALKEEPER LEGENDS WHO COULD DO THE JOB TODAY

BRIAN BALOYI

People call him “Spider” Baloyi. He was a super good goalkeeper in the 1990s and 2000s. He played for Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. Baloyi was great at stopping shots and leading his team. He helped Kaizer Chiefs win a lot of championships. He also played for South Africa in big tournaments.

ITUMELENG KHUNE

Khune has been a star for Kaizer Chiefs and the South African national team since the mid-2000s. He’s known for stopping shots, passing the ball well, and being a leader on the field. Khune helped Kaizer Chiefs win a lot of massive games and he also played for South Africa in big tournaments like AFCON and the 2010 World Cup. He might not have the form he once had, but at his best he was iconic!

MORE LEGENDS TO PICK FROM

ANDRE ARENDSE

Arendse was a big deal in the 1990s. He helped South Africa qualify for their first World Cup in 1998. Arendse was great at stopping shots and being a leader on the pitch. He played for teams like Santos and Mamelodi Sundowns while his iconic performance against Spain in the 2002 World Cup earned him lifelong respect.

BONUS: GARY BAILEY

Gary Bailey was born in England but lived in South Africa. He also played for Manchester United in England before coming back to play for Chiefs. Even though injuries ended his playing career early, Bailey continued to contribute to South African soccer through commentary on TV. For this alone, we’d love to see him at his pomp as an honorary South African, Bafana Bafana would welcome him!
