Cavin Johnson hopes to end Chiefs’ drought: ‘I want to win the Nedbank’

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson is eyeing silverware and the Nedbank Cup provides him with the opportunity.

Amakhosi have not won a trophy in nine years but the 65-year-old has impressed the Chiefs management having taken over the reigns from Molefi Ntseki last year October.

His objective is to get the Glamour Boys back in the CAF competitions meaning he either needs to win the Nedbank Cup or finish in the top 3 this season in the DStv Premiership.

“I think it’s an open discussion that we have had with our supporters and our management. We know that Africa [continental tournament] is probably the best playing ground for a brand like Chiefs to be at,” Johnson was quoted on Sowetan.

“And we would like to get into that space as far as African football is concerned. We would like to get into that space again and the Nedbank Cup is available for Chiefs this year,” he added.

Johnson could be rewarded with a permanent role should ge guide Chiefs to their first trophy in nine years, but the ex-Platinum Stars coach believes everyone at the club should put their hand up and play their part.

“Yes, it is not Cavin Johnson who put up his hand and said, ‘I want to win the Nedbank’. It’s the whole institution who put up their hands and said we want to go for the title as hard as we can and in the remaining games of the league, we want to play as hard as we can,” said the Chiefs coach.
