Mokoena only joined Sundowns in the January transfer window of 2022, coming in from crosstown rivals SuperSport United. Before joining the Brazilians, he was also heavily linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs. They then seemed to fall out of the race, with a club in Belgium joining and competing with Masandawana. In the end, it was the DStv Premiership champions that bid more and ended up getting his signature.

Since joining Sundowns, Mokoena has been a mainstay in their side. He has also been a transformed player under Rulani Mokwena, with his game going to another level. Since joining the club he has won two league titles, MTN8Nedbank Cup and African Football League Cup. Besides Mokwena, he has also found himself as a key cog in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana midfield.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE AND FRENCH LIGUE 1 SIDE IN FOR MOKOENA

“The interest in Teboho (Mokoena) has been growing since he joined Sundowns. What I know is that the Monaco’s interest has been there for a while now. They first inquired about (Cassius) Mailula but when they could not get him they then inquired about Teboho. Now they have renewed that interest. However there is another inquiry, this is from an English Premiership club that we can’t mention at the moment. There are very few people who know about it. They are a good club as well. Some of the things are not done by the Sporting Director but by the agent so it’s a tricky situation but the interest is there from those two clubs. One from England and another from France,” said one source to the publication.

Another source spoke about Mokoena’s prospects of leaving Sundowns for an overseas move.

SUNDOWNS WILL HAVE FINAL SAY

“As much as the inquiries and interest are there, you should not forget that it also involves money as it’s a business. Teboho has a contract with Sundowns and he is still their player. It’s them who would decide on whether he leaves or not and how much it could cost the interested team. There was a team from Belgium before who inquired about him but their offer was too low. So the money will also determine whether he goes to England or France or even stays at Sundowns for now. Let’s wait because the window period is closed. This could only happen at the end of the season as it were now,” said the second source.

After Mokoena’s Man of the Match performance against Morocco, his star has certainly risen. Should he propel Bafana Bafana all the way to Afcon glory, it may end his career at Sundowns  while heading for greater heights.
