South Africa’s star athlete Wayde van Niekerk will be in action at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest in Hungary on Tuesday, 22 August.

Van Niekerk will take part in the semi-finals of the men’s 400m at 21:00 (SA time) on SuperSport channel 208.

Van Niekerk has been drawn in the first of the three semi-finals and will run out of Lane 8.

Only the top two finishers in each semi-final plus the runners with the next two fastest times will qualify for the final.

That final will take place on Thursday, 24 August at 21:35 (SA time).

Following the heartbreaking disqualification of Akani Simbine from the men’s 100m semi-finals, Van Niekerk represents one of very few remaining medal opportunities for Team SA.

As a reminder, Van Niekerk is the world record holder in the 400m, having posted 43.03 in memorably winning the gold medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.

Seven years later that time still stands as the quickest ever 1-lap time recorded.
