The Belgian strategist was full of praise for the players after they won the national team’s first bronze medal since the 2000 competition.

Broos revealed why he is so proud of this team, pegging their mentality as being pitch perfect.

“I said after Nigeria match that I was proud of this team, and I think today people can see why I say I am proud of this team. We were not fresh but when you see the mentality in that group, it is impressive,” said the delighted coach on SABC Sport.

“The boys did very well. They showed great mentality.

“They tried to do what I asked, and I understand that it was difficult. It shows that we if we have problems, we can count on those who are on the bench.”

Broos felt that the team came together through this tournament.

“I was satisfied with players on the pitch, but I was even more satisfied with those not on the pitch.

“They were encouraging them and pushing them.

“From this, you know that you have 23 guys who want one thing and that is winning” concluded the coach.

According to the official records of CAF, Bafana is also the first country to compete in three consecutive penalty shootouts in an Africa Cup of Nations.

Broos has been backed for a contract extension by the top brass at SAFA.

However, despite a decent effort at the Africa Cup of Nations, many still doubt the coach can take this team to new heights.
