With Top 14 teams hovering, Munster are preparing to lose Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok lock Jean Kleyn at the conclusion of the season.

Since joining Munster from the Stormers in 2016, Kleyn has been a pillar of the pack. He had a tremendous season, helping the Irish province win the United Rugby Championship earlier this year.

JEAN KLEYN LINKED WITH MOVE TO LYON

The 30-year-old lock changed his international allegiance earlier this year following his required three-year standdown term. He had made his Test debut for Ireland in 2019 after qualifying through residence.

Kleyn would play a big role in the Springboks 2023 season but his swap has put his Munster future in doubt.

He will now be counted as a non-qualified player for Munster, with Irish Provinces operating with limited numbers of players from elsewhere eligible to play for the team.

Both of Munster’s Springbok locks, Kleyn and Rg Snyman, will be out of contract at the end of the current URC campaign.

Lyon has selected Kleyn as their priority target to replace departing lock Romain Taofifenua, who is expected to join Racing 92, according to a report from Midi Olympique.

LYON REINFORCING

Despite being a vital member of Lyon’s pack, Taofifenua announced his retirement from international rugby following the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The Lyon team was apparently unable to convince the second-rower to prolong his career at the club.

After announcing the re-signings of Leo Berdeu (2026), Killian Geraci (2026), and Beka Saghinadze (2027), Lyon are now believed to be focused on Kleyn.

The team will also need to find Demba Bamba a suitable successor, since he will be joining Taofifenua at Racing 92 for the upcoming season.
