During the latter stages of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, one of the big questions revolved around whether Lukhanyo Am would be included in the Springboks‘ matchday 23, especially considering that the impressive and in-form Jesse Kriel had firmly taken over the No 13 jersey.

Am had previously been the unequivocal first-choice outside centre, but an injury on the eve of the World Cup initially ruled him out of the squad, although he was later able to receive a call-up after an injury to Makazole Mapimpi.

Yet, the fact of the matter is that at the time, Lukhanyo Am hadn’t played a competitive top-tier game for an extended period of time, and he ended up playing an off-field role in South Africa’s success, with the Bok coaches opting against selecting him during the playoffs.

LUKHANYO AM HAPPY TO HAVE HELPED THE BOKS IN OTHER WAYS AT THE WORLD CUP

In an interview with Planet Rugby, Am reflected on the positives from his involvement in helping the Boks make history.

“Being part of it was special,” Am told Planet Rugby, when asked about his time in France. “I was playing a different role, preparing the boys, which was really good.

“I definitely enjoyed watching us win the World Cup. It was very special for the team and for the country.”
