The Proteas launched a furious assault on the Bangladesh bowling at the back-end of their innings in the Cricket World Cup match in Mumbai.

After a big hundred by Quinton de Kock, another half century for stand-in skipper Aiden Markram and a brutal 90 from Heinrich Klaasen, the Proteas posted a total of 382 for 5.

The total is the third-highest in the 2023 Cricket World Cup so far and goes with the two higher totals that the Proteas have already put up.

In their opening match against Sri Lanka the Proteas put up 428 for 5 which is still the biggest score from any team in this tournament. After a shock loss to the Netherlands the Proteas hit back against England.

England had no answer to the bullying Proteas batting lineup and gave up 399.

De Kock struck his third hundred in just five matches and looked on to set a new ODI record for South Africa but was dismissed 14 runs short of the Proteas record held by Gary Kirsten who struck an unbeaten 188 against the UAE in the 1996 World Cup.

DAVID MILLER FINISHES OFF

After big knocks by the top order David Miller would finish the innings with a cameo that helped lift the Proteas to another huge score.

“It was a really good wicket, coming in their at the end I had no choice but to go for it. With the slower balls it didn’t really come on, but other than that it was a typical Wankhede wicket,” David Miller said at the innings break.

“It was coming on to the bat nicely at the end. The top six know their roles. The guys have been batting phenomenally well and it’s great to see.

“They say you mature with age, and I am understanding my role better,” Miller said when asked if he was in the form of his life over the last year or so.

Bangladesh will need a record chase to win the match.
