Springboks first lady Rachel Kolisi – the wife of captain Siya Kolisi – has shown her support to female referee Aimee Barrett-Theron. This, after the official was praised for “checking” Sharks player Bongi Mbonambi in a game over the weekend

The KwaZulu-Natal-based player – who is also a Springbok – was accused of “disrespecting” Barrett-Theron throughout the URC game against the Lions.

The Lions – won the game 40 -10 on home turf at the Emirates Airline Park stadium in Johannesburg.

In a post-match interview, Bongi shifted some of the blame on the ref for the club’s loss.

RACHEL KOLISI SHOWS SUPPORT TO AIMEE BARRETT-THERON

In a post on the URC’s Instagram account, Aimee Barrett-Theron was praised for her communication skills with Bongi Mbonambi.

Alongside a clip of their frosty encounter, the organisation posted: “Respect the rugby values.

“Northlands Girls High School’s Aimeen Barrett-Theron with the final word.”

When one follower complained that Aimee was not on par with “physicality and speed,” URC clapped back: “We stand proudly with Aimee and her world-class contributions.”

Interestingly, the post was liked by Springbok WAG Rachel Kolisi. The first lady of the Springboks has been vocal in her support for female empowerment across various career paths.

Prior to their move abroad, Siya Kolisi played alongside Bongi Mbonambi at the Sharks.

WATCH: WHAT SHE SAID TO BONGI MBONAMBI

Throughout the Sharks vs Lions game, rugby fans accused Bongi Mbonambi of being unnecessarily rude towards referee Aimee Barrett-Theron. This includes claims he walked away when she spoke, interrupted her, and questioned her decisions on the pitch.

In a clip that went viral on social media, the 36-year-old seemed to have had enough of the player’s attitude.

She can be heard saying: “Bongi, may I speak please? Listen, I fully respect you and who you are, and I am well aware that all of your players have probably played more games than I have refereed in the URC.

“But we are on the same field, so if you could show me the same respect that I show you, that would be very much appreciated.”
