RONWEN WILLIAMS DREW INTEREST FROM ORLANDO PIRATES

Williams, then aged 30, emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in the league at SuperSport United.

Without surprise, Pirates showed interest to sign the Gqeberha-born keeper, but so did Sundowns.

According to Williams, Sundowns’ players in the Bafana Bafana camp did enough to lure him to Chloorkop.

“Everytime I played against Sundowns, it was so difficult. Training with their players in the national team, you could see the level was much higher,” Williams said, quoted by the Citizen.

“The talks they had as well, they didn’t talk about winning the league but they talked about winning the Champions League and it was crazy to see where their mental space was.

“They were looking to break barriers and I wanted to be there and I wanted to be a part of it. Just the way they do things is a crazy level. To see them year after year challenge to win the Champions League is tough.

“We have a technical team that believes that we can achieve things and win the Champions League and play at the Club World Cup and break records,” Williams added.

FORMER SUNDOWNS STAR TO REPLACE THEMBINKOSI LORCH

Staying with Pirates and Sundowns, a former Buccaneer has suggested who should fill Lorch’s shoes after his departure to Chloorkop.

Reacting to Lorch’s departure, former Pirates star Benedict Vilakazi has suggested Lesedi Kapinga. According to “Tso,” the Musina-born Kapinga has similar attacking abilities.

“It’s a big loss for Pirates losing a key player like Lorch. Supporters and a lot of people are looking at the club to have quality players to challenge Sundowns for the league title,” Vilakazi told Sowetan Live. “To lose a player like that to Sundowns is a blow in terms of how you can challenge them for the league. I mean he was a key player. But it didn’t come as a surprise. I played the game for a long time.”
