On 22 June 2024 Wales will play a one-off Test match against the world champion Sp[ringboks at neutral Twickenham.

This will be South Africa’s first match after their victory in the Rugby World Cup in France last year, and Rassie Erasmus’s official return to the position of head coach.

SPRINGBOKS TO FACE WALES AT TWICKENHAM

Additionally, Warren Gatland’s team will go to Australia for two Test matches, with the first scheduled for 6 July in Sydney and the second one taking place in Melbourne a week later.

Wales’ home field, the Principality Stadium, will not be available for the match against South Africa due to high-profile concerts taking place there in June, including performances by Taylor Swift, Pink, and Foo Fighters in front of Cardiff crowds.

The match will take place on a day that coincides with the United Rugby Championship (URC) final. Therefore it is outside of World Rugby’s international calendar. Wales and the Springboks may be significantly depleted as a result.

“We have very fond memories of the World Cup warmup test we played against the All Blacks at Twickenham last year,” Erasmus said in a statement.

“The fact that we’re playing Wales, who we have faced there before in an exhilarating 2015 World Cup quarterfinal, will bring back plenty of memories as well.”

WALES NEED TO BE BETTER

The last meeting between Wales and The Springboks was a one-sided affair. The Springboks won 52-16 in Cardiff ahead of the 2023 World Cup.

“To have the opportunity for our young squad to test itself against the world champions at a neutral venue is an extremely important experience and something that we will relish,” Gatland said in a statement.

“We know the Wallabies will be hurting after the Rugby World Cup but Australia is a tough place to go and play rugby and we’re expecting a fired up side led by new head coach Joe Schmidt.”
