Scoring a try for the Springboks at the Rugby World Cup is an achievement coveted by all who have played the game in South Africa.

One man stands head and shoulders above the rest in this race but some might surprise you.

Joost van der Westhuizen (6)

Playing in three Rugby World Cups from 1995 until 2003, the dynamic and legendary halfback managed to score six tries in the tournament.

Van der Westhuizen didn’t cross the whitewash in 1995 but scored against Scotland and Uruguay in the group stage in 1999 before a memorable try against England in the last eight.

In 2003, van der Westhuizen scored a hat-trick against Uruguay to take his tally up to six in total.

Danie Rossouw (6)

The third Rossouw to dot down at a Rugby World Cup after hooker Chris and utility back Pieter, Danie Rossouw also has six tries to his name at the showpiece.

Making his RWC debut in 2003, Rossouw score his first try in the tournament against Uruguay in Perth.

He scored a brace against Georgia at the same tournament and went on to score in both the 2007 semi-final against Argentina and again in the group stage in 2011 against Fiji.

Makazole Mapimpi (6)

Makazole Mapimpi scored all of his RWC tries so far at the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Mapimpi scored twice against Namibia in the group stage and also touched down against Italy.

He scored two tries in the Rugby World Cup quarter-final against Japan and became the Springbok to score a try in an RWC final.

JP Pietersen (9)

JP Pietersen made his Rugby World Cup debut in 2007 and scored his first tries in the group stage.

Pietersen ran in his first score against Samoa in the opening game and would be on the double when South Africa beat England 36-0 at the Stade De France.He would score again against Fiji in the quarter-finals as the Springboks stormed to the title. 

Pietersen played in the 2011 RWC but wouldn’t score again until 2015 when he touched down against Samoa and Scotland in the group stage.

Jaque Fourie (9)

Jaque Fourie was always known for being able to get on the board consistently and so he proved at Rugby World Cups, scoring in his first match in 2003 against Uruguay and going on to get tryline fever against Georgia and Samoa.

In 2007 he breached Samoa yet again and scored twice in the group stage match against the United States and he scorred the first of the Springboks five tries against Fiji in the quarters.

His swansong came in the disappointment of 2011 when he also got on the scoreboard against.

Bryan Habana (15)

Bryan Habana got going from the very start as a Rugby World Cup try-scorer, he scored give against Samoa in his RWC debut.

He went on to score three more at the 2007 World Cup as the Springboks went all the way and scored twice in the disastrous 2011 campaign.

Habana added two tries in his final RWC to end level with Jonah Lomu as the all-time top try-scorer at the tournament.
