South Africa boasts a wide variety of popular hiking trails, such as Table Mountain and Fish River Canyon. However, some of the country’s best hiking trails lie in its more remote regions.

ZULULAND FORESTS

There are dozens of indigenous forests in the Zululand region of KwaZulu-Natal. Each of these forests is unique in its own right, but the one thing they all have in common is magnificent bird life. OLIFANTSBOS SHIPWRECK HIKING TRAIL

One of the most scenic, undiscovered hiking trails in the Western Cape, is the Olifantsbos 5km hiking trail located in the Cape Point Nature Reserve. Hikers can expect raw beauty and rich history along this trail.

COFFEE BAY

Located in the Eastern Cape, Coffee Bay is nestled between the northern Mtamvuna River and the southern Great Kei River. This coastal area, known as the “Wild Coast”, is renowned for its minimal commercial development. Hiking up and down the hills along the coast will ensure you experience the natural beauty. A hike to Hole in the Wall is highly recommended. It’s about an 11km hike from Coffee Bay. You can go on your own or with a local guide.

SKEURKRANS HIKING TRAIL

The Skeurkrans hiking trail is located in the Waterberg mountains, not far from Naboomspruit and approximately a two-hour drive from Pretoria. Many consider it one of the most picturesque trails in the region, offering hikers of all skill levels a chance to appreciate the beauty of the area. The trail consists of two separate day walks starting from a central base camp.

SWELLENDAM HIKING TRAIL

Swellendam, located in the Western Cape, is not only the third oldest town in South Africa but also home to one of the most picturesque hiking trails in the country. It is undoubtedly a must for any avid flower lover. Hikers can complete this 70km hike over six days. It is recommended for more experienced hikers.

FANIE BOTHA TRAIL

The Fanie Botha trail is another noteworthy trail. It is a multi-day hike that people complete in 2-5 days, depending on experience and preference. Many people consider it one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the whole of South Africa. The trail’s uniqueness lies in the numerous incredible waterfalls scattered throughout the region that hikers encounter along the way.

AMATOLA HIKING TRAIL

Certainly a must for photographers, is the Amatola trail. Located in the Eastern Cape, it showcases impressive highland scenery. Along the way, hikers will encounter a variety of waterfalls and rock pools. This challenging hike typically spans over six days. It is important to note that many people who are knowledgeable about hiking, consider it one of the country’s more difficult trails.
