This is a list of the world’s largest countries (and their dependent territories) ranked by total area.

The world’s largest countries vary not only in size but also in typography, climate and cultural diversity.

The list is compiled with data from Wikipedia, according to the total area – taken from the United Nations Statistics Division.

Russia

The largest country in the world is Russia. The country spans an area of over 17 million square kilometres.

Located in the Northern Hemisphere, Russia spreads from Eastern Europe across to the east side of Asia.

Canada

This country which sits to the north of the United States of America is the second largest country in the world. 

It spans an area of 9,984,670 square kilometres. As well as being a member of the British Commonwealth, the country has French roots. It has two official languages: English and French.

China

The third largest country in the world is China. Its official language is Mandarin.

Located in Asia with an area of 9,596,960 square kilometres, China has a huge population and diverse topography.

USA

The United States of America is the world’s fourth largest country. It has several territories in areas like the Pacific Ocean.

The USA boasts an area of 9,833,517 square kilometres. English is the de facto language of the US but Spanish and a variety of other languages are also spoken.

Brazil

Brazil is the fifth-largest country in the world. It occupies most of the Eastern part of the South American continent but straddles between both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

The country occupies 8,510,346 square kilometres in area. Portuguese is widely spoken.

Australia

The Land Downunder, also known as Australia, is the world’s sixth-largest country. It spans an area of  7,741,220 square kilometres. The country is also a continent.

Australia is a nation of immigrants. It is home to many South African expats. Nearly 200 thousand South Africans reside in Australia.

India

The seventh-largest country in the world by size is India. It is home to a large population which drives the country’s economic growth.

India spans an area of 3,287,263 square kilometres.

Argentina

This South American country which boasts some spectacular scenery has an area of 2,780,400 square kilometres. Owing to its colonial past, the official language of Argentina is Spanish.

Kazakhstan

The eighth largest country in the world is Kazakhstan, in central Asia.

It has a total land area of 2,724,910 square kilometres. Kazakhstan is the world’s largest landlocked country.

Algeria

Located in North Africa is the world’s tenth-largest country. It has a total land area of 2,381,741 square kilometres.

The official languages of Algeria include Arabic and Tamazight.
