Today is the first International Mandela Day that the world will celebrate without the man that inspired this day, Nelson Mandela. But judging from the outpouring of love and efforts that South Africans around the world are making today – he would be so proud that his legacy lives on in a new generation.

“The greatest free man I ever knew should have his legacy continue as long as the rest of us can help keep it alive,” says former US President Bill Clinton (see video below).

Mandela Day is about changing the world for the better, just as Madiba did, every day. The idea is to set aside 67 minutes today to celebrate the legacy South Africa’s former President left behind by doing something for someone else.  It doesn’t matter how big or small whatever you do is, just do it!

This year President Zuma has urged all to demonstrate their love for the country by cleaning their surroundings. He himself will take part in Operation Clean Up at Nelson Mandela School of Science and Technology in Mvezo near Mthatha, Eastern Cape.

If you’re not sure what to do, some are some ideas from other members of the SAPeople community who would gladly welcome your participation:

THE LA LUCIA BABY HOUSE, DURBAN – Jordan Collins

A letter we received from a proud son…

Hey guys! I am a South African who is at university in the USA. I love this page. There is nothing better than seeing positive things about South Africa!!

My parents run a baby house in Durban, SA, taking care of six babies at a time until they can find them adoptive parents. The work they do is incredible, and they do all of this on top of their regular jobs. I would love it if you could share a link to their facebook page, as they are trying to gain support to keep the baby house open and allow them to train others to open baby houses around South Africa as well.

Their facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/TheLaLuciaBabyHouse

With Mandela Day today, it may be a good way for expats to feel a part of things that are happening in the homeland!!

Thank you for your time!

DONATE A WINTER GOWN – Ashleigh Frank Elad

I would love to remind everyone about my campaign – Donate A Winter Gown Drive – for the terminally ill and needy children of South Africa. Especially for today, Nelson Mandela Day.

When we got word about freezing children in some government hospitals, I decided with the help of my niece to launch a campaign to help make a difference to these sick children’s lives regardless.

So Donate A Winter Child’s Gown Drive came about. I am not affiliated to any organisation just a mom and a niece on a mission.

We are looking to make a difference in someone else’s life and keep these children warm. I am appealing to the public to donate a child’s gown, any size will suffice together with a personal note for each recipient.

This is spreading like wild fire as there have been heartfelt requests to visit all hospitals in Gauteng.
Thinking of people less fortunate.
To each and everyone that is donating, thank you for being amazing!

SPEND TIME WITH SOME BABIES AT HOLAH BABY HOUSE – Lyn Wilson

Likhon Ithemba is a charity that runs and administers the HOLAH Baby House which is based in Durban North South Africa. The need for such homes in South Africa is on the increase as more and more babies are abandoned. While many are left in hospitals, many are found in public toilets, car parks, and dust bins.

HOLAH (House of Love and Hope) is run by Kim and Leanne who have recently just adopted the first baby that came into there care. They are very passionate about the future of these children, they create a safe, loving family enviroment and ensure that each baby that comes into there care will find there “forever family”

Having helped 14 babies to date, the need to do more and help more is essential.

As an NPO Likhon Ithemba relies on the kindness of people just like you to help us continue to keep our doors open.

Please donate, however big or small your donation is, it is hugely appreciated.

Have you decided how you will be spending your 67 minutes ?

Why not spend your 67 minutes playing, cuddling, loving and helping out our beautiful babies at HOLAH Baby house. We would love to have you come over and spend some time with us.

If you are too busy to leave the office, why not make a cash donation or drop off some nappies and formula for our little ones.
