As the fallout continues at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) over the imposition of censorship by COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the resignation of the acting CEO, the protests by journalists and the declaration by the chairman that everything is fine at the public broadcaster, here are some of the best of the statements and memes on social media.

  • Motsoeneng, who does not want township violence – such as the kind that flared in Tshwane last week – shown on TV, says he does not know the word “censorship” and there is an agenda to destabilise the SABC:

  • After CEO Jimi Matthew’s resigned on Monday, tweeting his resignation letter on social media, the Communications Minister Faith Muthambi said, “It is unfortunate that Mr Matthews decided to turn his resignation into a social media issue, without raising his concerns internally, nor communicating his concerns with the Ministry of Communications. The timing of his resignation is suspect.”

  • SABC chairman Mbulaheni Maguvhe said on Tuesday that he saw no crisis at the SABC, despite the resignation of the acting CEO and protests over Motsoeneng’s actions.

  • Numerous groups have started picketing outside the SABC, including the Democratic Alliance:

  • Sympathisers of the censored SABC journalists have been posting pictures online of themselves with their mouths taped up, as a sign of solidarity against censorship:

  • Posters against Hlaudi went up at the SABC HQ in Auckland Park on Wednesday:

  • Not long afterwards, SABC employees took them down:
