Tomorrow,19 November, is World Toilet Day… and to celebrate here’s an old video from 2012 of glamorous South African actress Charlize Theron sitting on the loo!

The Oscar winner made the joke video together with Funny or Die (watch below). But first, did you know:

1 in 3 people don’t have access to proper toilets

Toilet Day was started (in 2001) to raise awareness about the sanitation crisis for millions in the world who don’t have access to basic toilets. Here are some sobering statistics:

  • 1 in 3 people don’t have access to proper toilets
  • That’s over 2 billion (and many of them are in South Africa – see video below)
  • Part of Cape Town township Khayelitsha – Endlovini – is home to an estimated 20,000 people who share just 380 or so communal toilets.
  • More people in the world have access to mobile phones than toilets
  • One toilet flush uses up to 9 litres of water.
  • Placing a brick into your cistern can save up to 2 litres with each flush.

The City of Cape Town says: “With our dams at a 10-year low and tougher level-3 water restrictions in force, placing a brick into your cistern can save up to 2 litres of water with each flush. Think before you flush. Care a little… Save a lot.”
