Charlize Theron caused a flurry of activity on People magazine’s website when she stepped out to the Post Office yesterday – and it wasn’t just because it’s the first time she’s been seen in public with her new 4-month old baby whom she recently adopted.

The commotion was over a comment by someone called Alina who posted a rather disparaging message about Charlize, saying:

“Who is she? Why is she famous? And who cares? I mean really I’ve never heard of Charlize Theron, let’s stick to real celeberity news!”

Fans of Charlize jumped to her defence, citing her brilliant movies, her Oscar (for ‘Monster’) and criticising Alina with comments like “@Alina what rock have you been living under? You’re either really young or really clueless. And if you don’t know who she is or care about her, then why bother to comment? One thing’s for sure, you’re really an idiot.”

Others then jumped to Alina’s defence observing that not knowing every Hollywood star doesn’t make one an idiot (although maybe posting a rude comment does!).

There was one slight distraction when one pundit identified where others can purchase the red muslin sheet that hides little Jackson from prying paparazzi (a product that was introduced to the US by an Australian expat mom who missed the muslins that are traditionally used in Australia):

As Charlize herself recently told British ‘Hello!’ magazine, being famous has become a ‘freak show’, with the attention on stars now beyond anything she had ever imagined.

She told the magazine: “It’s become a freak show. It drives me insane. There are certain places that you just can’t go. I’m OK with that, but it’s the things you can’t avoid like when you’re going home. That’s not even sacred any more.”

Of the new addition to her life, she said it has been “overwhelmingly incredible. Every day there is something new. I think that by the journey I decided to go on, it’s evident that I really wanted to be a mom, so I’m just overjoyed and very happy that it worked out … He’s doing great.”
