The Cape Town chapter of the 5th World Naked Bike Ride took place this morning at 10 am. Cyclists (and those on rollerblades, scooters and wheelchairs!) were invited to “come as bare as you dare”. Photos captured by Simons Pics (thank you!).

This earnest group of naked and semi-naked cyclists were not out to provoke and contrary to the visuals, the ride was not about nudity.

They were riding for Clean Energy.

“It’s about joining in a world-wide campaign/protest for the environment. We ride for cleaner energy, less reliance on fossil fuels, and to  encourage more people to cycle!” said a post on the group’s Facebook page (World Naked Bike Ride – Cape Town).

The route started and ended at Prestwich Memorial, before cycling through Cape Town’s CBD, and then looping back in Sea Point.

Dress code was left up to the riders with “bare as you dare” meaning that those who didn’t quite dare, didn’t have to go fully naked.

According to the World Naked Bike Ride international website, this global bike ride has been initiated in order to “face automobile traffic with our naked bodies as the best way of defending our dignity and exposing the unique dangers faced by cyclists and pedestrians, as well as the negative consequences we all face due to dependence on oil and other forms of non-renewable energy.

Thank you to Simons Pics for all the photos.
