What? Six? Sheesh, I could give you six dozen reasons to climb in a car and come and kuier with us here in the Heartland.

  1. However, in honour of short-number listings, let’s look at a sixpack of motivations, beginning with that crazy-creative festival they stage out in the Tankwa Karoo every autumn: AfrikaBurn. www.afrikaburn.com
  2. At the corner of the Karoo & Kalahari, about 80 klicks south of Kimberley, you’ll find our latest national park: Mokala. Ironstone koppies and grassy plains, the melodious lark and the jaunty gemsbok. www.sanparks.co.za
  3. Come for a book-schnuffle in Richmond, the little Northern Cape town on the N1. They have bookstores galore, restaurants, art galleries and a horse museum of note. www.richmondnc.co.za
  4. Graaff-Reinet has its own Jamie Oliver, in the form of Slow Food restaurateur-chef Gordon Wright, the author of Veld to Fork and the mine host at the Andries Stockenstrom Guest House. www.asghouse.co.za
  5. Take a ride through the village of Willowmore with Joseph Makwena and his donkeys, Suzie and Sweetlands. www.baviaans.co.za
  6. Visit Groenvlei Guest Farm out on the Graaff-Reinet – Richmond road for some pure Karoo air, big space and utter stillness. www.groenvlei.com

Oh, and here’s a seventh highpoint, especially for you fly fishermen out there. This fellow with the big trout in the lead photograph is Alan Hobson, and he knows ponds along the Little Fish River in the Karoo where you can find and land 6.4kg monsters like Nessie, the one currently residing in his bar. www.anglerandantelope.co.za

Have a great week wherever you are – big hugs from down here in the Karoo…
