Eyewitness News calls Meyer’s “dramatic return” a “major shock”.

Local media say the decision has been influenced by South African Rugby Union’s (SARU’s) wish to maintain continuity going in to the World Cup of 2019.

Bok hooker Schalke Brits is reported to be “delighted” and believes Meyer is likely to appoint him as captain to “lead the team to glory”; whilst former captain Corne Krige is quoted  saying that while it’s a controversial decision, “he’s a good person and I think he’s the right man for the job. I’m happy to have him back.”

Radio stations have reported that instead of a five-year contract, Meyer would be getting an “indefinite” contract.

The news has shocked many…who have forgotten it’s April Fool’s Day!

In reality, the formal announcement about the new Springbok coach is only likely to take place on 12 April. SARU will be holding an annual general meeting today in Cape Town where the ratification of the new candidate and his management team will take place. Stormers coach Allister Coetzee is rumoured to be the prime candidate.
