When international wedding photographer Luca Barausse wanted to propose to his girlfriend, he not only took her on a romantic road trip to the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, he also very cleverly had her film the proposal… and she had no idea! (Watch video below.)

“Being a photographer I wanted to capture the moment somehow and a friend and I came up with this method,” Durban-based Luca told SAPeople.

British-born, Durban-raised Jodie Rudd thought it was just a magical road trip. They stopped on the way at Golden Gate “which blew our minds”, and almost cancelled the rest of the trip to stay there, it was so beautiful.

After a day trip in Clarence they entered the Mountain Kingdom through Peka Bridge and stayed at Ramabanta trading post, an “amazing little spot in a beautiful part of the world”.

Luca says: “There were mountains of cosmos everywhere! The next day was D Day. We headed to Semonkong Lodge where we took a pony ride to the waterfall. Maletsunyane Waterfalls is the highest single dropping fall in Africa, they say. It’s an incredible sight! We had a picnic there and then I chose my moment…”

What you don’t see on film is that Luca was in such a rush he actually tripped and it could’ve gone horribly wrong.

“But it turned out perfect and best of all she had no idea 🙂 The rest of the trip we headed to Katse Dam and then back to South Africa, down Sani Pass… with a stop at the highest pub in Africa naturally.”

The music in the video is a Desmond and the Tutus song which became the couple’s road trip song.
