South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma has, on the recommendation of the National Assembly, appointed Advocate Busisiwe Joyce Mkhwebane as the new Public Protector for a period of seven years, with effect from 15 October 2016.

The President – who recently had to pay back some of the costs of his Nkandla homestead upgrades thanks to a report from the outgoing Public Protector, Advocate Thulisile Madonsela – nonetheless thanked her for her services, and wished Advocate Mkhwebane all the best in the execution of her new responsibilities.

At a farewell party, Gauteng Premier David Makhura also thanked Madonsela “for saving us from ourselves” and having the “courage to confront wrong regardless of who has done wrong”. He praised Madonsela for having had the humility to withstand tough  times even when the odds were against her.

Madonsela said: “I would like to thank the President, when I was first appointed he told me to operate without fear or favour… and I did exactly that!”
